Feeding the hungry
Our mission is to meet the needs of hungry people in our community. Many people struggle to put food on the table.
In addition to the unemployed and homeless, there is a large number of working poor and elderly residents whose monthly incomes do not cover their expenses. These individuals and families earn a minimum wage or are retired on fixed minimum incomes.
Paticularly hard hit are low income families and single parents with young children. According to our local census, one in six residents' falls below the poverty level, even more distressing is that the rate of poverty is 50% higher in our area than in the general city population.
These statistics become a stark reality each month when nearly two thousand people receive 18,500 emergency meals from the West Valley Food Pantry shelves.
Where we receive our Support
Nearly 35% of the food distributed is from collection drives by the member Congregations, the U.S. Postal Service, the Boy Scouts and other supporting groups and individuals. Food donations are also received from out local markets (Albertsons, Ralphs, Trader Joe's, Vons), the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, restaurants, other businesses in the area.
The other 65% if food is purchased from wholesale and other low cost food outlets with funds contributed by FEMA*, and generous individuals, congregations, service organizations, and by an annual fundraising event.
Annual Costs & Expenses
The annual cost of food continues to rise, thus the operating expense for the Food Pantry is about $80.000. This amount provides meals costing about 39 cents with an operating expense for support equipment, maintenance and food transportation of less than 5%
How You Can Help
We always need more volunteers! Volunteers typically work at the Pantry in two 2-1/2 hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, and one shift on Friday. Volunteers may schedule to work shifts once a week or once a month or more, depending upon interest and availability.
Volunteers' sort and store food as it is received, and dispense it to recipients. They also validate recipient's eligibility. Volunteers may also pick up donated food on a regular basis from markets, other donors and food drives. Volunteers help promote food drives and donations through clubs and organizations.
Speakers are available to explain the Food Pantry to your organization.
